Be Kind Rewind (Where's the comma?)

"I will shoot you! And I know robot karate."
I finally saw Mike Gondry's Be Kind Rewind film last night. I tried to see it at the Sundance Film Festival in January, but it never happened. And then when it came to theaters, it was only showing at one theater about an hour away. But finally, I saw it.

I liked the movie. It was a lot like I imagined it would be like, but I found it hard to watch surprisingly. I'm having a hard time pin-pointing the reason it was difficult to watch. I thought it was aesthetically-pleasing. I liked the dialogue. The writing was wonderful. The acting was superb with Jack Black, Danny Glover and Mos Def. I wasn't a huge fan of the music, or the editing. You know what? That's what turned it off for me. The editing.

Jeff Buchanan was the Director of Editing for Be Kind Rewind. With the except of Dave Chappelle's Block Party movie, Jeff Buchanan has not done anything substantial, unless you want to count his "The Work of Director..." documentaries. I'm not saying just because Jeff Buchanan hasn't done many big hit movies, that.....nevermind. I'm not going to worry about being mean. Jeff Buchanan's editing is hard to watch. It's unfocused and mildly frustrating. I do not like Jeff Buchanan.

The best things about Be Kind Rewind were the acting, the setting style and the whole idea and writing behind it. What a great idea! A magnetized guy erases all the movies in the rental store and him and his friend recreate all the movies in order to keep the rental store afloat. Sweded movies. Ghostbusters. Danny Glover in general. All these elements combined give Be Kind Rewind its own uniqueness.

This movie is worth the price of admission. You won't learn anything, and you won't have a life changing experience by watching it. At the most, you might have a strong desire to make some of your own "sweded" movies and you'll laugh a bunch.

I'm Going to Try and Get Up to Sundance this Year

Sundance -- Robert Redford's renown film festival held in beautiful Park City, Utah.

Here are the films that looked good to me:

1. A Complete History of My Sexual Failures - It just looks funny.
2. Anywhere, U.S.A - Filmed in NC with an all-unprofessional cast. This movie is a real independent movie.
3. August - Josh Hartnett plays a more-than-he-really-is dot-com entrepreneur. Looks good.
4. Baghead - Doesn't the name alone make you want to see it?
5. Be Kind Rewind - This movie is one of my personally most anticipated movies of the year. I'm dying to see it at Sundance before it hits the theaters. It's a film with Jack Black and Danny Glover. Jack Black somehow erases an entire rental store's videos and Danny Glover and him spend the rest of the movie re-making videos for people. Some of the videos they re-do include Robo-Cop, The Lion King, Back to the Future, etc.
6. Birds of America - It looks serious, but boasts a great cast.
7. Choke - Sex, Drugs and Alcohol...
8. Chronic Town - More Sex, Drugs and Alcohol....
9. Guitar - It's supposed to capture my imagination and heart....crap....
10. Henry Poole is Here - Luke Wilson. It's going to be good. That's all I need to say.
11. Last Word - "Hilarious dark romantic comedy"
12. Mysteries of Pittsburgh - I feel like this is the most talked up movie up there.
13. Phoebe in Wonderland - I love C. S. Lewis; but somehow, I think this movie is going to have nothing to do with him or Wonderland.
14. Pretty Bird - Looks funny.
15. Hell Ride - Quentin Tarantino's at it again.
16. Smart People - Dennis Quaid is in it.
17. Sugar - It's about baseball, but there are fireworks in it!
18. Trouble the Water - Hurricane Katrina documentary - should be way good.
19. Wackness - Looks way funny.
20. What Just Happened? - Robert De Niro's romantic movie. Ugh.
21. Where in the World is Osbama bin Laden? - Why did take so long for this title to get out?
22. Year of Getting to Know Us - #2 on my list behind Be Kind Rewind. Jimmy Fallon!

Best and Worst of 2007 Movies / Movies in 2008

I came across this extensive list of all the upcoming movies for 2008, and it looks like it's going to be a better year in movies than 2007.

But as I made the list of movies that came out this year, I second-guessed that statement. There were some personal instant classics this year. I guess I'll have to wait and see if this next year can out-do movies like 300, Juno, Hot Fuzz and Grindhouse.
