Movie Tarts: May 2011

IT'S SUMMER TIME!!!  And that means SUMMER MOVIES!

So unfortunately, I'm late posting this and I have already seen two May movies: Something Borrowed and Thor.  As a result, this post will not be unbiased.  Darn.

My most anticipated movie of May 2011 is: Hesher (05/13) - Hmmm...let me see, Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, Rainn Wilson and Natalie Portman?  I'm in!  This grudgy, sad story looks awesome.  Lots of broken glass, a long-haired rocker JGL, and a dorky, sweet NP make me foam at the mouth.  (Not really, but I wish.)

My second most anticipated movie of May 2011 is: The Tree of Life (05/27) - I'm still on the fence about this one.  The director has done some hit-and-miss work, but it does star Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.  I'm going to hope for the best because if it is good, it is going to be very, very good.

The Beaver (05/06) - Mel Gibson is doing something a little different this time.  It's not epic or heroic.  It's bizarrely endearing.  Mel is a husband/dad who is losing it (all), and in an attempt to cope, he communicates through a puppet beaver.  Yes, I said that.

There Be Dragons (05/06) - Ok so I honestly can't remember anything about this movie except the fact that I remember seeing the trailer and getting mildly-to-moderately excited.  It reminded me of Dragonheart.

Thor (05/06) - If you're like me and think the trailers for this movie looked like they were trying to deter people from seeing this movie, then you need to pull out your calendar and pick a day and write in "See Thor!"  This movie was surprisingly not sucky.  It was kind of fun.  Even enjoyable.  Who cares that is was only made for the sole purpose of being able to make The Avengers?  Personally, I can't wait to see Robert Downey Jr. make fun of Thor and his hammer.

Something Borrowed (05/06) - Rom Com...chick flick...ugh.  As far as these kinds of movies goes, this was not the worst.  As an avid Office fan, it was made bearable by Jim (John Krasinski).  Without the half dozen scenes with him, I might not have made it through the movie.

Everything Must Go (05/13) - Here you go selective-Will Ferrell fans that only like serious WF from movies like Stranger Than Fiction.  This movie is about a guy who loses everything and decides to do a yard sale and start over.  It might be better if you just watch the trailer.  The story is more dramatic than we I just described.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (05/20) - I will see this eventually, and I tell you right now, I will not enjoy it.  I hate when crap it strung-out.  It's way worse than just one or two loads of crap.

(If you want to see the trailer, go find it yourself)

The Hangover Part II (05/27) - This looks really good.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (05/27) - I love Dreamworks animated movies, but sometimes I get the feeling they only spend time and money on movies that require a forced sequel.  I loved the first KFP, so hopefully this one produces.

Movie Tarts: November 2010

Here comes the holiday season, and with it comes all the movies that weren't quite ready for the summer movie season.

My Most Anticipated Movie this November is:  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, of course!  And this wasn't a clear forerunner for the most anticipated movie.  There are some particularly interesting movies this November.

My Second Most Anticipated Movie this November is: 127 Hours
This movie looks intensely stressful! Which is weird because it's about a guy who is probably the opposite of stress.  Plus James Franco will really shine in this one.

Megamind - Well we know that Will Ferrell can make terrible movies, but I have a feeling this is not going to be one of them.  In an era of animation movies that are appealing to all ages, this one will fit right in.  But in a Will Ferrell kind of way.

Due Date - Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.  And Jamie Fox. What a combo!  This is going to be so funny!

Morning Glory - This movie has a mix of actors with high caliber that will produce results.  Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, the underrated Rachel McAdams, and many others.

The Next Three Days - I'm not sure about this one yet, but with Russell Crowe and Liam Neeson and 30 Rock's Elizabeth Banks, it will definitely be worth seeing.

Love and Other Drugs - This one is directed by Edward Zwick so you know it'll be good.  But it's a romantic comedy by Edward Zwick! And it stars Jake Gyllenhaal (one of my favorites) and Anne Hathaway (everyone's favorite).

The King's Speech - It has all the ingredients to be good, so I assume it will be.

Favorite Movie Scene #5

The closing credits of Stranger Than Fiction were absolutely stunning!  And not only because Spoon is playing, but it is sooo visually engaging.  Few movies invest into the closing credits like this film did.

Guess Who?

This has been my work computer background for a long time. I just recently switched it to the K-Mart Rendition of Will Ferrell.

The Backside Boys

(Warning: There is footage of male behinds in this video clip.)

Will Ferrell and other hilarious comedians making up crap after their comedy stand-up show. It's awkward, gross and almost certain to make you laugh.

Will Ferrell's Top 10 Movies

I love Will Ferrell. And his movies. So I decided to rank them his top 10 movies in order of how much I enjoyed them.

Bonus: The Landlord

10. Superstar

9. Old School

8. A Night at the Roxbury

7. Zoolander

6. Starsky and Hutch

5. Blades of Glory

4. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

3. Elf

2. Stranger Than Fiction

1. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Semi-Disappointed

Semi-Pro, from what I heard, was going to rank somewhere in between Anchorman and Talladega Nights. I didn't think it got close. (Will Ferrell movie rankings)

Now I hesitate to say that, and I'm embarrassed to this: I didn't like Anchorman at first. Most of Will Ferrell's movies take time to grow on me. Usually, I think the movie is only mediocre, but after a second or third viewing, I fall in love. But I don't think that is going to happen with this one.

First off, its R when all the other Ferrell classics are PG-13. The reason for that is the "F" word. They did not use it sparingly in Semi-Pro. There were also some overly crude parts.

The worst part of it all is it wasn't that funny. I laughed throughout the movie, but the quality of humor in Semi-Pro doesn't match or even compare to that of Anchorman or Talladega Nights. It was sad and disappointing.

(I did like that Andre 3000 was in this movie though!)

Best and Worst of 2007 Movies / Movies in 2008

I came across this extensive list of all the upcoming movies for 2008, and it looks like it's going to be a better year in movies than 2007.

But as I made the list of movies that came out this year, I second-guessed that statement. There were some personal instant classics this year. I guess I'll have to wait and see if this next year can out-do movies like 300, Juno, Hot Fuzz and Grindhouse.
